Rhinelander photographer Tim Smith covers sporting events and activities for the print and web editions of the Star Journal. His interest in sports photography initially stemmed from participating in a series of sports, particularly basketball and motorcycle racing, at a young age and progressed after taking multiple basic photography courses in high school.

His passion for sports photography continued after his children became involved in competitive sports. With his daughter, Sydnei, on the varsity basketball and track teams for Rhinelander High School as well as the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball league based in Madison, he is continuously around the athletic environment. “There’s something exciting about freezing a motion sport,” said Smith. “Nothing captures the emotion of a team and those moments quite like a photo.” An example of Smith’s ability to capture the mood of a game can be seen his photos of the Hodag boys varsity basketball team shortly after falling to Hortonville in the playoffs. “No story can capture that moment better than a single shot can,” said Smith.

Aside from sports, Smith is involved in a range of photographic opportunities. His company, TMK Smith Photography, specializes in senior portraits, weddings, still life and nature photos and is looking to expand, based on the needs of his clientele. “I started my company taking primarily senior portraits and have always enjoyed the opportunity to document events that are personal for others,” said Smith.

Tim Smith can be contacted at (715) 493-0269 or at TMKSmithPhotography.smugmug.com.
