The Vilas County Master Gardeners are offering another free workshop to the public. This month Ruth and Henning Hempel, owners of Forth Floral in Rhinelander, will discuss “How to care for your houseplants.” Lighting, soil, watering and pesky pests are some of the topics which will be covered.

Henning is a native of Germany, growing up in his parents’ greenhouse business. He came to the United States as an exchange student to attend the University of Minnesota and worked in greenhouses in North Dakota, California, and Minnesota. He continued his education at the Meisterschule in Friesdorf-Bad Godesburg, West Germany, graduating in 1976 as Gaertnermeister or Master Grower. He returned to this country and worked in the floral industry in Colorado and Minnesota before moving to Rhinelander.

Ruth is a graduate of UW-River Falls, where she studied horticulture and business. She worked at Len Busch Roses in Plymouth, Minn., before returning to Rhinelander. She has attended the Hixon School of Floral Design in Cleveland, Ohio, and she is an FTD Master Florist Manager.

Having lived their entire lives in the floriculture industry, the Hempels strongly believe in the power of flowers and plants to make people happier and healthier. Their discussion will be presented Thursday, March 14, starting at 7 p.m. in the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, located at 5030 Hwy. 70 in Eagle River. For more information, contact Bill at (715) 891-5084.
