Swim club competes in regional championships

With the regular conference season finished, 17 Rhinelander Swim Club swimmers travelled to Fond du Lac to compete in the Wisconsin State Regional Championship Meet held Feb. 15 through 17. Combined, they had 40 top 10 finishes, with five of them being first overall in individual events.

Jack Antonuk (8) continued his great season by taking 5.16 seconds from his 50-yard freestyle for a new time of 37.63 seconds and took first overall in two events, along with winning high points for his age division; Russell Benoy (11) cut an amazing 29.85 seconds from his 500-yard freestyle for a new time of 6:52.34; Charlie Heck (8) dropped 6.18 seconds from his 50-yard freestyle for a personal best of 42.02 seconds; Grace Heck (12) took 5.14 seconds from her 100-yard IM for a time of 1:23.32 and 5.36 seconds from her 200-yard freestyle for a time of 2:33.34; Joseph Heck (10) took 5.98 seconds from his 100-yard backstroke for a time of 1:19.30 and 14.47 seconds from his 100-yard breaststroke for a personal best of 1:45.63, along with taking first overall in two events and bringing home a second place high points plaque for his age division; Maria Heck (8) took off 5.50 seconds from her 100-yard IM for a personal best of 1:53.60; Thaddeus Heck (10) came home with a first place overall; Taylor Hollands (11) dropped 7.01 seconds from her 100-yard freestyle for a new time of 1:19.77; Alex Peter (17) took off 5.54 seconds from her 200-yard backstroke for a time of 2:48.98; and Valarie Puza (14) dropped 13.08 seconds from her 200-yard backstroke for a time of 2:50.14, 9.63 seconds from her 200-yard freestyle for a time of 2:27.50, and 13.67 seconds from her 200-yard breaststroke for a personal best time of 3:03.44.

Two lucky young swimmers will be travelling to Madison Feb. 22 through 24 for the 12 and Under State Meet. Joseph Heck (10) qualified for this meet in his 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:19.30 and the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 38.54 seconds. Sayge Stojadinovic (10) qualified for the state meet in her 50-yard freestyle with a time of 31.72 seconds.

Several swimmers also qualified to attend the Midwest Regional Meet being held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center March 23 and 24.
