Rhinelander High School welcomes new liaison officer
Rhinelander High School has hired Sgt. Tyler J. Young as the school’s new liaison officer. Sgt. Young, a 1989 RHS graduate and Rhinelander native, will be taking the position of former liaison officer, Det. Sgt. Phil Newcomb.
Upon graduating college, Sgt. Young was employed as a patrol officer for the Tomahawk Police Department and was hired as a deputy for Oneida County in 1996. Aside from his duties as a deputy for the county, Sgt. Young is a defense and arrest tactics instructor as well as a field training officer and serves as a special commander for the SWAT team in Rhinelander. His work experience within the field of law enforcement has also allowed him the opportunity to facilitate the D.A.R.E. program within the MHLT district in Hazelhurst, which also contributed to Young’s passion for promoting safety in the realm of education.
Having seven children within the School District of Rhinelander, Sgt. Young has a vested interest in providing a safe learning environment that is conducive to education. He has always taken an interest in working with children to promote a safe learning environment within the community. While serving as a patrol officer in Tomahawk, Sgt. Young spent his time away from duty working with Coach Bill Makris as the assistant coach for the RHS football team and spent much of his vacation time in 2012 coaching the RHS freshman baseball team. Sgt. Young’s responsibilities as liaison officer won’t differ much from his duties as an Oneida Co. deputy; however, his primary responsibility will be to protect and ensure the safety and security of students and staff within the high school.
When asked what his vision is for the school in terms of new policies being implemented, Young answered, “This position is an evolving position; every officer’s duties and responsibilities are continually changing as we’re constantly responding to the dynamic needs of the environment. We strive to keep it moving in a direction of improvement.”
