Marshfield Clinic, Ministry Health Care support Girls on the Run
Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care recently joined to support the Girls on the Run (GOTR) organization with a $1,000 contribution.
GOTR helps communities in the United States and Canada through its network of more than 200 councils. Each council is committed to the mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.
“GOTR is a transformational learning program for 8- to 13-year-old girls,” said Linda Wohlleber, council director for GOTR of the Northwoods. “We teach life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games.”
The program culminates with participants being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K run. The next run is scheduled for June 1, 2013, at Lakeland Union High School. The goal of the program is to unleash the girls’ confidence through accomplishments while establishing a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness, Wohlleber said.
The donation will help fund scholarships for financially-challenged families, race expenses, healthy snacks, the curriculum, program supplies, program and CPR training for coaches, operational costs and general implementation of the program.
“Because of the generous gift from Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care, we will be able to offer our program to those girls who otherwise would not be able to afford it, said Lynn Laurence, GOTR program director. Last year, more than 40 girls were on scholarship, which represents about two-thirds of our participants. These funds are critical for our organization to continue to educate and empower the girls of our community, giving them the tools they need to become the confident young women they were meant to be.”
Since 2004, GOTR has changed the lives of more than 500 girls in the Northwoods. The support from area businesses, organizations and individuals has assisted in the growth of the council. That support helps GOTR fulfill its mission of inspiring hundreds of local girls to gain confidence and to get the necessary tools to embrace their individual strengths as they enter middle and high school, Laurence said.
Officials from Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care said this donation was made to assist a local program that serves the physical, emotional and social health of the girls in the communities they serve.
