A typical day at NCSS
The first thing we do when we get to school is morning circle. That is when Ms. Larsen (my teacher) tells us about the day. Sometimes in morning circle we do activities like problem solving or analogies. After morning circle, we get into our reading groups. Reading groups are when some of us go into Mr. Rumney’s room (the teacher next door) and some of us go into Ms. Larsen’s room. When we get into the classrooms, they will start reading to us. Once they are finished reading, they will ask us a question. We will then write about what we heard and put it into our time logs.
After reading groups, we do project time. Project time is when we do projects with a partner or work by ourselves. We work on projects until break. Break is when Ms. Pohnl (our classroom helper) takes us outside and we can practically do anything, such as soccer, football or just enjoy some fresh air.
When break is over, we come back inside and do Larson Learning Math. Larson Learning Math is when we go on the computer and work on math. We do math until our math goals are done. If they are done, we can go help people with their math or we can keep doing our own math.
After math is lunch. Lunch is from 11:15 a.m. to noon. For lunch, you get 20 minutes to eat and then there is another break, which is 25 minutes. At break you can play soccer, volleyball, Frisbee and football or talk with your friends.
After break, we head back to our classrooms. Ms. Larsen then does a read aloud to us in circle. Read aloud is when she reads us a book and we journal about it in our time logs. After read aloud, we have more project time. During project time, we continue to work on our projects but if we are done with a project, we can then defend it with Ms. Larsen. When we defend a project, we show what we have learned.
After project time is done, we do silent sustained reading (SSR). SSR is for 45 minutes to an hour. Then when SSR is done, we do our time logs at the end of the day. Time logs are where we log what we did for the day. Logging our time is very important so that we get credit for what we have worked on during the day. Then we do afternoon circle and Ms. Larsen puts us into teams and does trivia with us. At 3:03 the bell rings and it is time to go home. This is a typical day at NCSS as a 7th grader.
