The 2012 general election is over and according to Oneida County Clerk Mary Bartelt, things went “extremely smooth.” At about 86 percent, turnout was higher than expected, with 21,781 voters showing up at polling places throughout the county to make their voices heard.

As a result of the election, President Barack Obama remains in office, winning Wisconsin with 53 percent of the vote to Mitt Romney’s 46 percent.

Wisconsin voters are sending Democrat Tammy Baldwin to the U.S. Senate after her defeat of former governor Tommy Thompson, 51 percent to 46 percent.

Rep. Sean Duffy was able to retain his Congressional seat, defeating his opponent Pat Kreitlow.

Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst is the new occupant of Wisconsin’s 12th State Senate District seat. “I am excited to get back to Madison to work for the residents of northern Wisconsin and to build a brighter future for our state,” he said in a statement. “We ran a positive campaign, focusing on big ideas and a new direction for our state and I would like to thank my opponents Susan Sommer and Paul Ehlers for doing the same.”

Rhinelander resident Rob Swearingen won the race for Wisconsin’s 34th Assembly District seat. In a statement, Swearingen said, “Not only has this been a humbling experience, it has also been an educational experience.” He thanked his supporters, and concluded by saying, “I would also like to thank my opponents Merlin Van Buren, Kevin Fitzpatrick and Todd Albano. Although we disagreed on some issues, I respect their positions and thank them for running positive campaigns.”

Mary Czaja defeated opponents Kevin Koth and Patrick K. Tjugum for the 35th Assembly District seat.

Michael W. Schiek won the district attorney race, defeating Scott Moller. Mary Bartelt ran unopposed to retain her position as Oneida County Clerk. Kris Ostermann also ran unopposed for Oneida County Treasurer and Kyle J. Franson ran unopposed for Register of Deeds.
