Our Turn

Since the first day it started, I’ve been staying every Monday and Tuesday for Champs at NCSS. During the first hour after school ends (around 3:03 p.m.), we have Power Hour. During Power Hour, we do extra work like Larson math, our projects or sometimes in my case, helping out my teacher. The second hour is Enrichment. Starting around 4:15 p.m., we have various activities throughout the week. Every other Monday, we have Arts and Crafts with Miss Larsen. The first time we made pictures using glue, salt, and watercolor paint. I, being a Pokèmon fan myself, made a picture with a Pikachu in a field.

The Monday after Arts and Crafts for Enrichment is something I’m sure a lot of people love. Video games! This event is with Mr. Santy, who brings in his Nintendo Wii. The first game we played was Mario Kart Wii, which my brother, Joshua, won due to him having the best controller. (I didn’t know how to play with my controls at first!) The second game was Wii Sports Resort, which I promptly lost in the first sword fight I did. The winner was my brother Joshua again, who had played the game a bit beforehand.

On Tuesday, we had crocheting with Miss Ellerson. The first time I went, I learned how to single and double crochet. Using those new skills, I’ve been making a scarf that hasn’t been too even because I didn’t know how to do it exactly right. It was almost correct, but a bit off when I went to the next row. The following week we had a lot more people (including both of my brothers, Jared and Josh), so we started a little group project. We were told to make washcloths using a ball of cotton yarn. I needed to relearn how to start it up, since I forgot how to the first time. After learning that, I had to start on the first row…which I have dubbed evil due to how tight my stitches usually are. But after getting that evil first row done, it was pretty easy to make a nice, even square, rectangle… thingy. I had it done the following Thursday. So for fun, I bought three more of the yarn balls we had used and made another rectangle (it was one this time). The second yarn ball I’m still working on to make another… rectangle, most likely.

The third Monday of Champs was Arts and Crafts again. This time, we made folded paper books. Using 10 pieces of paper in two different colors, we measured, cut and put together a little book. My colors were cotton candy-like, blue and pink. I still need to decorate mine, but an Alice in Wonderland design is in my mind to draw (especially Cheshire Cat).

Another activity available at NCSS that I haven’t been to includes Car Club with Mr. Delveaux on Tuesday, where we work on car parts. Also on Tuesday, there is bowling at Hodag Lanes. Wednesday you are able to go to the YMCA and Thursday is Music Combo with Mr. Delveaux and Mr. Santy, or the YMCA again.
