Martin A. Varekois, 75, of Kasson, Minn., and formerly of Rhinelander, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012. He was born on July 23, 1937, in Rhinelander, where he spent much of his life, to Marin and Theresa (Antonitus) Varekois.

After graduating from Rhinelander High School, Martin served a tour in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1958, he began a 34 year career with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. He married his loving wife of 53 years, Bonnie, on May 17, 1959. Martin was an avid outdoorsman, dog lover, and jack-of-all-trades. He had a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to entertain through an endless array of stories.

Martin is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Varekois of Kasson, Minn.; his children, Mark (Gwen) Varekois of Rockford, Mich., Patrick Varekois of Portage, and Jean (Terry) Wright of Minneapolis, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Ashlee and AJ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Theresa.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m., at Grace Foursquare Church, 4360 Hwy. 17, with Pastor Jeff Weddle officiating. Burial will follow the service at Newbold Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Carlson Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church.
