Letter: ‘Legitimate Rape’ is an absurd idea by Barrie Johnson
Editor:
Congressman Todd Akins of Missouri is opposing democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the coming election. Mr. Akins is on the House Committee of Science and Technology. He justified his position against abortion in rape cases by saying that she would rarely get pregnant from “legitimate” rape, because her body has a way of dealing with those things! Possibly in line with the archaic belief that she cannot get pregnant unless she is aroused!
To justify outlawing abortion, Mike Huckabee said “Sometimes good people are conceived in rape.” Rick Santorum said “Babies from rape are a gift from God. Victims should make the best of a bad situation.” These beliefs stem in part from replacing science classes with woman-hating religious doctrine in our schools. The institution for religious teachings is the church. The institution for teaching science and math is our schools, and the two never should meet.
We are failing our children terribly when a male Texas university student asked his health professor what were his chances of getting cervical cancer! These medieval beliefs have no place in our society. Ladies, you should never countenance the denial of health care, especially reproductive care, for any of your sisters. Your country desperately needs your active participation in politics, local, state and federal. We need your feminine point-of-view to balance the testosterone squirting, gun toting, hatred of women every Republican politician is espousing. We cannot ask the men-they are too busy polishing their bullets, pausing only to enjoy the occasional “legitimate” rape, to pay any attention to what is happening in politics.
For your own sake, and that of your daughters and granddaughters, learn the issues, then vote accordingly. The Republican party is not the Grand Old Party your father voted for. It has degenerated into the Tea Party, a political organization whose goals seem to be those of the book burning Flat Earth Society. Legitimate rape? How many more of these wing ding absurdities can they come out with before you start recoiling in shame? Or, more to the point, in fear? How could you want such mental incompetents to represent you?
