I am an independent voter. On July 31, I attended the political forum at Nicolet College, and it was a refreshing experience. Four representatives were in attendance-two running for the 34th Assembly seat and two running for the 12th Senate seat. Unfortunately the Republican candidates did not attend.

I heard no rhetoric or mud-slinging, but simply detailed information regarding local challenges such as issues surrounding mining laws, funding education, high-speed internet and small business concerns-important discussions associated with improving and sustaining life in the Northwoods.

I realized how difficult and important these local positions are when intelligent and dedicated people step up to the challenge and really think for themselves. Please vote on Aug. 14.

Merlin Van Buren would be an excellent choice to represent the 34th Assembly and the people of the Northwoods.
