Hospital volunteers to host sale Saturday
Updated Wed., 5/30 – It’s that time of year again when garage and rummage sales are popular, but one coming up this weekend will feature some unique items that will be sold to raise money for a good cause.
The Volunteers of Ministry Saint Mary’s are hosting this rummage sale to raise money for scholarships for graduating students who are planning on entering a medical field. This is the first time Ministry volunteers have hosted a rummage sale fundraiser. Bake sales, ice cream socials, geranium and plant fundraisers, book and scrub clothing sales, in addition to money raised at the hospital gift shop, have all gone toward funding these scholarships, but this year the volunteer organization decided to try something different.
Organizers hit the jackpot when they asked the hospital foundation if any items from the old hospital could be donated to the rummage sale. It was decided that the furniture and fixtures from the now closed facility on Kabel Ave. would be donated.
“We can’t believe how much stuff there is,” said Patty Fitzpatrick, foundation and volunteer services coordinator. “There are hundreds of items that will be added to the sale.”
Those items include file cabinets, nightstands, shelving, fixtures, book cases and more than 200 chairs.
“Everything is in really good condition and built to last,” said Fitzpatrick. “Because most of these items were used in a hospital setting, they have been well taken care of and are very durable. The chairs have wooden arms and upholstery that would fit in well anywhere.”
Some of the items will have price tags, but much of it will be classified into a “make offer” category. And in addition to these furnishings, volunteers and community residents have been donating other rummage sale items as well. In fact, the Volunteers of Ministry Saint Mary’s are inviting anyone with rummage sale items to donate to have them at the Riverside Clinic on 1040 Kabel Ave. by this Friday, June 1. No adult clothing, electronics or large furniture will be taken.
The fundraising rummage sale is slated to run on this Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1020 Kabel Ave. on the site of the old hospital. This rummage sale will be held rain or shine, as all items will be under a tent. No early sales will be allowed.
Last year the volunteers of Saint Mary’s were able to award six students with $2,500 scholarships toward their education.
“Some of the students we award this money to graduate from Rhinelander High School, and we also offer them to hospital staff returning for more education or family of staff that are entering a medical field,” said Fitzpatrick. “We are excited about this rummage sale because it has the potential to make some good money for this very worthy cause.”
