No dictating American Dream by Karen Schroeder

The President is dictating criteria for the American Dream to be home ownership and a college education guaranteed through government control (regulation) of the banking system and college loan programs. His one-size-fits-all definition disrespects the variety of skills, talents, and creative interests needed for a happy, productive society. He sacrifices the dreams of many Americans while expecting them to finance the dreams of others. The Constitution assures individuals the freedom to define their own Dreams.

Citizens whose goals include travel during each step of professional advancement may find home ownership professionally limiting and fiscally irresponsible for their circumstances. Age and some physical infirmities may require the financial flexibility provided by an apartment, an assisted-care facility, or a nursing home at various times in their lives. Some people do not want their funds locked in real estate during a down market. For some, renting is a fiscally responsible choice and should not be undermined by any elected official or government policy.

The President implies that individual value is determined by a college education. This narrow approach disrespects other forms of “genius” needed for a productive population. Respect for “book smarts” is popular because it is the one form of intellect that can be most easily defined and measured. There is no test to identify those who will write music that will move nations, who will create a painting that shakes the human conscience, or who will invent a product that will improve living conditions for millions.

Bill Gates left college explaining that it provided nothing that he needed at that time, yet his contributions to our society have improved the lives of millions. Many significant contributions are being made by talent which is not shaped by a college education. This President is ignoring his oath to protect and preserve these freedoms for each citizen.

The American Constitutional Republic protects citizens from the tyrannical acts of political leaders who want to control our markets and take tax dollars from one to fulfill the dreams of their voters. Every election provides an opportunity for each of us to protect and defend our constitutional freedoms or to allow a political candidate to purchase and determine our dreams, our security, and our votes.
