Who are the supporters of the Wisconsin Winter Special Olympics competitions? The layers are many, and run deep within the organizations and communities of Wisconsin.

One of these layers is an extensive group of volunteers from the 2012 Special Olympics USA Scarf project which began three years ago. Wisconsin is one of the 40 programs this year with volunteers working on scarves in support of the 43,000 goal for this year’s winter programs across the country. In Wisconsin these competitions included Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and Snowboarding.

Knitters and crocheters from several Wisconsin Chapters of the P.E.O. Organization (a philanthropic educational organization) contributed their time and talent to this cause. Women from Conover, St. Germain, Eagle River, Rhinelander, Minocqua and Presque Isle donated 43 toward Wisconsin’s goal of 1,000 scarves. Knitters chose their own patterns, or selected from the choices available online.

For more information about the project, visit scarvesforspecialolympics.org.
