Adjusting to a Healthier Lifestyle Week 1

The first week of “Fit for Life” kicked off with a bang. All of the participants came in with the excitement and drive to start the 12 week program. The participants began the program by getting basic measurements and some essential information at the kick off meeting. After receiving their first weekly workout, and setting up a meeting with a personal trainer, they were all ready to work hard and succeed in the weekly challenge.

The personal trainers were busy meeting with each individual in the “Fit for Life” program. Each individual has their own experience with working out, but by meeting with a personal trainer they are able to verify what they are doing is proper and are able to learn a few new methods. The participants are also able to get to know the trainers and begin building a relationship with the employees at the YMCA. The personal trainers noticed that many were comfortable with asking questions right away and have had experience using the machines and different techniques of working out, while others have little experience and are more timid about approaching equipment for exercising.

During the “Fit for Life” program, many of the participants come to know each other. As this happens, we notice that losing weight becomes a team effort. In the first week of the program the trainers and employees are able to see that the participants have begun working together. They are cheering each other on and are motivating others to succeed by creating and maintaining a healthier lifestyle, whether it is mentally, physically or emotionally.
Dr. Wendy Henrichs gave a lecture on Thursday to discuss how much a diet contributes to a person’s body composition. She also discussed the work and knowledge that is essential to losing weight and keeping it off. The participants learned how to calculate their resting metabolic rate and their daily caloric need. Dr. Wendy Henrichs also discussed how to properly eat and drink before, during and after a work out.
After meeting for two boot camps during the first week, and a nutrition lecture by Dr. Wendy Henrichs, many were anxious to use the information they learned the first week to begin seeing weight loss, and start leading a healthier lifestyle.
