Obituaries for 12/18

Clinton “Doug” Cook, 69, of Newbold, died Dec. 10, 2011, at Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital. He was born Feb. 10, 1942, in Rhinelander, to Hubert and Minnie Cook. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Karen (Dan) Passmore, Pam (Tim) Hall, Ann (Scott) Voigt and Scott (Tracy) Cook, all of Rhinelander; 13 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his brother, Eugene (Pat) Cook of Rhinelander; his sisters, Lois Koshak and Marion Steinmetz, both of Rhinelander; and his mother-in-law, Florence Kammer. He was preceded by two sisters, Phyllis Cook and Elaine Alsteen; his brother, Duane Cook; and his father-in-law, Lee Kammer. Doug was a longtime employee of the Oneida County Highway Department until he retired in 1999. He was also a member of the Newbold Fire Department, earning Firefighter of the Year Award and retiring as captain. Funeral services were held Dec. 15 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment was in Newbold Memorial Cemetery.

Marion N. Halsted, 82, of New York, and formerly of Rhinelander, died Dec. 5, 2011, at the Canterbury Woods Oxford Nursing Home in Williamsville, N.Y. She was born March 26, 1929, in Rhinelander, to Oscar and Gladys Nelson. She is survived by her husband, George; her daughters, Jane Halsted of Cranford, N.J. and Ann Regan of Barre, Vt.; two grandchildren; and her brother, Robert Nelson of Rhinelander. Marion grew up in Rhinelander and was a teacher in Amherst, N.Y. for most of her career. A burial and memorial service will be held next summer.

Katherine K. Wakely, 69, of Rhinelander, died Dec. 7, 2011, at Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital. She was born Oct. 7, 1942, in Rhinelander, to Walter and Thearse Hankey. She is survived by her children, Christine (Robert) Nelson, Jessica (Michael) Rygg, Ann (Kyle) Ladean, Vickie (Jeff) Paffrath, Michael, Mitchell, Christopher, Jess and John; 16 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; her sisters, Helen (James) Crocker, Susan Wakely, Shelby Dutton and Donna (Marlin) Jensen; her brothers, Bobby (Elizabeth) Hankey, Timothy Hankey and Donald Hankey. She was preceded by a sister, Mary. A memorial service was held Dec. 15 at Carlson Funeral Home.
